Why is my email and messaging eating my battery life and data when I have made no changes?

Since the android update at the beginning of March my battery is draining twice as fast. My data usage has tripled. In data utilization this month 53% of my data is being used by email and messaging. Last month it was 7% and the month before it was 11%. I usually use less than 1 GB and now I am at 3.32GB and I still have 6 days left in my billing cycle. Why is this happening, what can I do to fix it and what changed in my email and messaging?
