I updated my device, and it removed my pics from private mode. However the "private" files are listed under "my files" but each file says "there is no app able to download the files" Has this happened to anyone before, and if so can they be recovered?

If the phone is rooted, pull them with adb. If not, you can try rooting the phone (you'll probably overwrite a picture or two) and then pull them with adb. (Make sure USB debugging is enabled.)

Or, once the phone is rooted, you can use dd to make an image of the phone's storage, then use PhotoRec to recover all files, deleted, hidden, private, anything, from the phone's storage. (See munky-tool for some ideas. munky-tool thread is the XDA thread about it.)
