why don't i get a tone or have an icon to state i have a voicemail?

I have no tone when I receive a voicemail. I have no icon when I receive a voicemail. The only way I know if I have a voicemail is if I go and actually dial *86

Welcome to Android Central! Which phone? Open your Phone app, tap Menu>Settings>Call Settings>Voicemail, and make sure there's a notification tone set up . Try selecting a new one to make sure it plays a sample out loud.
