Can the phone model and IMEI be changed?

A

AC Question

Hi, I picked up a Samsung S6 from someone, and the back of the phone shows that it is model G920F, and it shows the IMEI, but when I go into the settings information, it shows model G920I with a different IMEI.
Is this possible or is it fake?

It is possible to change that data. I would be very skeptical of this as there is little reason to change it.

About the only reason to change it would be that it's a stolen 920F, or someone replaced a bad motherboard but used a 920I instead of a 920F. (The IMEI is in the motherboard.) If there's a 920F reported stolen in the area, the right thing to do would be to let the police handle it and get your money back from the "seller". If not, and it works, use it. (The radio frequencies are different between the two models, so depending on where you are, the F or the I may be the one you need, or they may both work. They have some frequencies in common.)
