How do I retrieve auto backup photos that have all disappeared from my phone?

AC Question

Auto back folder is on phone with 487 pics in it. I don't know how they got there nor do I know why they are no longer accessible for me to download onto my computer.

Welcome to Android Central! Photos that are backed up are backed up to your Google Photos cloud. You can see them on your computer browser at photos.google.com. You can also seem them using the Google Photos app--they should be displayed on the main screen.

Once a photo is backed up, you can delete the original on your phone's internal storage or microSD, if you want. The backed up photo should continue to be shown in the Google Photos app, but the photo itself isn't physically stored on your phone--it's just displaying what you have in the cloud. The only image that's physically saved to your phone is the thumbnail, unless you actually choose to download the backed up photo back to the phone.
