Where did my photos go? I moved them to the SD card and they disappeared!

My HTC One M8, which is about 18 months old and has a cracked screen (i'm seriously getting ready to junk it) has been having issues writing to the SD card for about the last month. It also won't be recognized by my PC via the usb connection. My solution was to take out the SD card and back it all up via a card reader, which worked fine, and then for any future photos, to write them to the phone's internal memory. This was working fine, but then I needed to get about 100 of those photos off my phone. I head a brain freeze and forgot that it wasn't writing to the SD card, followed some simple online instructions, and moved the photos to a new folder I created on the SD card. Now, they have vanished. Ugh. I don't see them on my phone or on my SD card. Any ideas of how I might be able to recover them?

Welcome to the forums. There might be some recovery programs out there for your PC, but I am not sure how well they will work if your phone isn't already rooted.
