Double tap power button gesture doesn't bypasses the lockscreen

[AC Question]

I'm using Android Marshmellow on Nexus 6P and I've enabled the 'Press power button twice for camera' option under Settings > Display

But when I use the gesture, I get stuck on lock screen!

Is this expected? Is there a way to bypass this check?
