Why did my S7 home and recent apps buttons and notifications stop working?

When I turned my phone on today, it started up in some weird mode where I had to double-tap everything, to scroll I had to use two fingers, etc. The help desk had me reset all my settings, which fixed that. However, the home and recent apps / multitasking buttons don't work now, and I'm not seeing notifications (just hearing them). I'm not willing to do a factory reset (at least not yet), and it looks like this may be a common problem. Any suggestions?
