accessing private mode files after update

i had some pics i stored in private mode, i updated to android 5.0 on my galaxy s5 and i cant seem to view my private mode files. i have added more files to private which i can view no problem but i cant see my old files i had pre update. ive tried connecting it to my laptop enabling private mode and going through the private folder it shows 1.1gb used but i can only view the newer private files which amount to 50mb. i have also tried going to my files app while private mode is on but no dice. i know i should have backed them up but its too late for that is there any solutions to this problem? any help would be highly appreciated.
