Currently, the app is showing the Android symbol when I installed the updates.

Because it's a system app. Just uninstall updates and disable it if you don't want to use it.

Yeah, you should. What device do you have? Try in settings - apps - select Hangouts - force stop (if possible) - clear data - disable and confirm.

I have the Nexus 6. I can uninstall the updates but have no other options. Not a biggy if I can't.

You can only disable after you uninstall updates.

Disable is not an option I see. Is this something available only in Rooted devices.

No. I'm not rooted and I have it. Just go to Hangouts, uninstall updates. After uninstalling updates, the button should change to disable.

Just remember that you need to set another SMS app as default. Which one are you using now?

I have Google Messenger as default. I have a Nexus 6 and when I uninstall Hangouts, it only shows update and open. I have no disable button at all. I'm on Android N.

If you can't disable Hangouts in settings - apps after signing out, as explained in the link I posted before, I'm not sure what else to suggest. Sorry.

Just a thought. Do you have the Hangouts dialer installed in your phone? If so, try disabling/uninstalling it first.
