why does Yahoo mail "network timed out" on android smartphone?

Bought new smartphone. Installed same Yahoo mail app I've been using on my old phone. When I try to open the mail with the app, a message pops up that says "network timed out". None of the solutions I've found on the web seem to help. If I turn wifi off on my phone, then the Yahoo mail app works fine. Other apps on the phone work fine with my wifi.

Just an opinion, but Yahoo is garbage, if you feel the need to continue using their email I would install it on a different email app.
