Default $249 NC vs $299 Galaxy Tab

Well, there are now rumors flying that the price of the Galaxy Tab will soon drop to $299, possibly around the time that the Xoom is out.

While rooting and applying ROMs to the NC has been fun, it's tempting to pay just $50 more for a device that's already got a stable version of Froyo running, has built-in cameras (back & front-facing), working bluetooth, microphone (for voice search & commands), etc. I just have to see what, if anything, the dev community is doing to get gingerbread or honeycomb on it.

I might return my NC on 2/24 (14th day of ownership).

Will that price come with a 2year contract

I'm a T-Mobile customer using an android phone and can definitively say that they sell the Galaxy (and the Dell Streak) for the lower prices only with a 2-year contract, as shown on the website. You can buy them without the contract but you are going to pay at least $449. $200 more than an NC, not all that bad. But if you just don't need another device with "built-in cameras (back & front-facing), working bluetooth, microphone (for voice search & commands), etc.", then the NC could still make a lot of sense. Just depends, I guess, on how you plan to use it.

Seconding techienana's answer. Long time T-mobile customer and I called them yesterday and they stated that the $299 is only with a 2 year contract.

I have seen the article that mentioned the Tab dropping to $299. It was an article about the Xoom, but I don't remember which one, sorry. That would be a good price and would probably increase their sales.
    Edit: Here is the article

    So, let's see....

    $249 Nook Color + $30 microSD card = $279.

    vs.

    $299 Galaxy Tab + ($20 * 24) = $779

    Um....

What can I do with $500? Let's see...that's food for my family for 2.5 months. Or my electric bill for 3.5 months. Or 12.5 bottles of Scotch.

Scotch FTW! The Galaxy may have all the specs over the nook, but with my Galaxy S Epic 4G (which I've already spent an a$$ load on...) I already have front/rear cameras, blue tooth, blah blah blah... And since I've already rooted the phone and have wireless tethering capabilities, viola, a 7" tablet with accessibility to the internet anywhere there's service.

Sure it's arguable that not everyone who has a nook has a mid-high end smart phone with such capabilities. Then again, if you're looking to spend 3/4 of a G on a tablet, why not just get yourself a worthy phone to accompany your shiny new Nook Color?

You can feed your family for two and a half months with only $500? Haha, you must be feeding them rice and quarter waters.

Okay...maybe 2 months. But we've got a freezer full of pig and cow, too.

And what's wrong with rice and water? Saves money for Scotch and gadgets.

A little too peaty for me. Now that I think about it, there's a nice Speyside that's only about $24 a bottle at my local liquor store, and I'm sure I could get a case discount.

If you guys don't hear from me for a while....
