I keep hanging up

So what am I doing wrong with the phone? When I am talking to someone I always seem to hang up on them by accident or somehow I end up launching something in my notification bar. Is there a way to lock the notification bar while the phone is in use?

You can lock the screen by pressing the power button once the call connects.
