My mom told me she has to charge her tablet battery twice a day, so I went into Battery stats and Cell Standby was 41% while Android system was 29%, WiFi was 15%, and Idle was 14%. She uses it at home connected to WiFi and only brought it out once or twice on the road since buying it a month ago.
This is really insane for battery usage while she's connected to WiFi; it's not a phone, she doesn't use it for text messages (though Verizon assigns a number to it so it's possible), and there's no reason she should have to charge the tablet twice a day just for this.
I couldn't find any way to disable it (disabling Mobile Data doesn't turn off the bars at the top, which is the same in the icon on the battery usage list), so I had to show her how to turn on Airplane Mode then turn on WiFi... all of which is a little too much for a granny just trying to read on her tablet. I haven't noticed this problem on iOS devices, so is there a better solution (does disabling Mobile Data actually prevent Cell Standby drainage?), or does she need to jump through these hoops every time or get an iPad Mini?
