if it stays stuck for another 2 or 3 min, try (without doing anything else) turning the phone off and then on again, and see if the process starts back up. Setting permissions is the rooting part, so it may have worked even if it froze. You can install busybox and superuser on your own.

But the good thing about rooting is you only have to do it once - until Froyo comes along that is =/

That's the nature of the rooting beast - there's no real logic to it, it just happens lol.

What to do next: crack open a cold one and celebrate lol.

But seriously - next stop is ClockworkMod Recovery. Before you make any other root-related modifications to your phone, you need to install Clockwork and make a backup of your system in case you mess anything up (there's a how-to thread around here somewhere). But that is a story for another day. I'm calling it a night. Glad you finally got it working! :D

thanks again dude.. gonna do that clockwork jammy and go to bed myself

When you got stuck at "restart adb" you said you closed the command prompt. I take it u figured out to restart adb in the task manager?

Rag another thing I think I read in this forum peoples phones were unrecognizable and mounting/adb.
I'm pretty sure you can't install the drivers with debugging on. And the only time I turn debugging off is at school when plugging it into a new computer so it can find the drivers

So you're saying the first time you plug your phone in after installing the drivers it should have debugging mode off?

i dont really remember anymore. i just know that some computers will not recognize the phone to install the drivers or get the computer to recognize the phone, the first time you need to have debugging off.

so i guess just install the drivers, plug in your phone with debugging off, make sure it says its recognized. then unplug your phone and turn debugging on and continue.
because when i use computers at school to copy my drafting files to my sd card, the computer wont recognize my phone with debugging on

no i was restarting it in the task manager the whole time. i only closed the command prompt when it hung up. the for some reason i always had 2 instances of adb running when i closed it out though. then after i closed one it automatically restarted as a single occurance. the time that it actually worked i had to end the process like 4 times for it to continue

Hmm there is something is suggest which i think is very important.

If they just want to root they should do that, but if they want to use a new rom and kernel this should use http://forum.androidcentral.com/epic-4g-roms-hacks/34603-clockworkmod-recovery-instructions.html

Because it roots ur phone and it gets clockworkmod. In essence you will do 2 things at once. Also put something on how they can check if they are rooted. For example, go to command prompt and run adb shell, type su, and if you get # that means ur rooted
