Galaxy Tablet P5100 - CAN'T UPDATE SOFTWARE

Hi, a relative (mom) bought herself the Galaxy Tab GT - P5100 3g and Wifi- while they were in the UK, it's been a while now, and it's not running up to par anymore, and I'm almost certain that there must be a software update by now...

I have never owned a samsung device before as I'm a firm believer in my iOS (Apple) devices , any case, I don't even know what the latest android OS is or what the differences are, and, what the supported or latest software for this particular model would be...

My qurestion is, because it was bought in the UK and we're currently in South Africa that it's not registering correctly or something along those lines and that's what's causing the - no software update available, issue?

Have you tried downloading samsung kies to your computer and updating through that?
