should I use wifi and mobile data at the same time?

My phone never uses the wifi

It should switch to known, saved WiFi networks and turn off mobile data automatically. On our phones WiFi and mobile data are just left on and the phones handle things fine.

I have a Tasker task that, among other things, turns mobile data off when it's on wifi and turns mobile data back on when it loses wifi. (Since I'm doing other hings when I go from wifi to no wifi, I just added the line in each to switch mobile data on or off.)

Is that even necessary? That's part of the basic system functions. Or am I missing something?

The mobile data radio is still on when on Wi-Fi, just not transmitting anything. So turning it off can save some battery power.

I never really gave it any thought before but now that I have, I believe you're right. The radio would stay on, just inactive. Otherwise some functions would work poorly or not at all. WiFi calling works be a good example.
