Software update on t-mobile Unlocked phone ?

Is it safe to update t-mobile software after unlocking phone and going to straight talk ? I've been using my t-mobile unlocked on ST for a few months and I just got a notification to update software i was wondering if it was safe also how'd did you update if I am no longer on there service ? I am using ATT service now ?
