It depends on the voicemail system your carrier uses - it's usually the number of seconds before VM picks up - and that's normally about 5 seconds per ring, so set it for 5 times the number of rings + 2 (so it doesn't pick up before the last ring, but it picks up before the next one). You don't need upper or lower case letters, just numbers.
