why is hangouts / google talk so cool?

I hear people sing the praise of google talk (which I guess is just hangouts now but really I don't see why it's such a big thing when most phone plans these days offer unlimited talk and text.

I mean, I know nobody who uses it. We all call or text.

It's not that I'm against it if it's something g I'll like, but I can't get anyone to even switch to google plus, so I can't imagine switching anyone over to this.

Can someone maybe explain it to me?

Chat is a different beast than texting, its mainly done computer to computer whereas texting is phone to phone.

The whole point of Hangouts versus Talk is to integrate voice calling, texting and IMing into one portal - someone sends you a message and you get to decide how to receive it depending on where you are and what you're doing instead of the sender having to decide which of the 3 ways to reach out to you.
