Initial setup w/out SIM card

I plan on porting my phone number from my current carrier to Straight Talk; however, I want to ensure my Nexus 5 works without issue when I receive it this evening before committing to the switchover. Is there any issue with doing the initial setup without installing a SIM card? I assume I can just attach the device to my WiFi and do any updates required and should be able to activate the SIM once I'm sure the phone is in working order. I just want to confirm my assumptions are correct.
