C60? C70? C80? Does it really matter?

I've seen a lot of people posting and commenting about the C# of their Nexus 7, which actually only corresponds to the date of manufacture. Yet when you look closely, C70 and 80 devices also suffer from some minor problems. Now, I have a C60 unit with zero problems since launch. Is mine an anomaly, or are there others out there with preordered C60 units that are fine? Do you think we're putting a bit too much into this whole serial number analysis?

And besides, the screen lift that many complain about is so small, that if not for this mass hysteria, it would never have been noticed. I've never encountered a nexus 7 that wasn't slightly higher on the left side in terms of the bezel. Granted, I'm sure there were some that had a valid complaint with severe screen liftage. I've seen some pics. But do you think the hysteria has led to "too many" returned devices for the wrong reasons?

I think the screen issue was a "hey, that guy said his had it so mine did too." Mine has it but it does nothing to take away from the value and meaning of the device, in my eyes. I am pretty picky about my tech gadgets. I like to keep them looking good and working better. The MINOR screen lift is a non issue to me. But, I am not looking for attention.

Mine is a C60, never had a problem with it, I have checked for screen lift at every possible angle and there is nothing, the screen fits perfectly all the way round, I think it was more of a 'batch' thing rather than a whole series.

Mine was a pre-ordered C60 unit. It had significant screen lift that I noticed long before I read anyone complaining about it. It was a real, non-imaginary problem. My unit worked, but it was very sponge-like and creaky on the left side, with even the slightest pressure as I navigated up and down a Web page. The glass was lifted well above the bezel. It was VERY annoying! It was truly defective.

When I researched the problem and added my own experience to the forums, I was not "looking for attention" as a previous poster insinuated some were doing. I was simply validating the problem. Yes, some units had minor screen lift not worthy of returning, but many others were truly defective, like mine.

I also don't think there was "mass hysteria" regarding this. Remember, people's natural tendency in forums is to complain and seek advice, not to praise and say that all is good with the world. Although it seemed that there were a lot of complaints, this only represented a very small fraction of owners. Those of us with this problem were part of a very small minority. Hopefully forum visitors understood this and also understand that much of what they read in forums needs to be taken with quite a few grains of salt!

Finally, does the manufacture date really matter? Probably a little bit. Manufacturing and quality control processes are continually tweaked during a product's life cycle. Though the percentage of screen lift problems and returns was likely rather small, the problem was nonetheless real. Manufacturing engineers certainly made adjustments to minimize these (and other) problems, so that units assembled later were less likely to have defects. The key words here are "less likely", as in it's still possible, though less likely, a unit manufactured at a later date will have the same defect. It's all a matter of percentages, no matter how miniscule those percentages might be.

I did mention that people had some genuine problems, I've seen the photos. I dont doubt you. However, I do think that some people who have claimed to go through like 6 or 7 are looking for a unicorn. Sorry if it sounded like I'm questioning everyone who has had a problem, wasn't my intention.

I bought a C60 from Wal-Mart. It has been perfect since day 1. No screen lift or problems to report.

When I bought my first from Walmart it was a C70 and it had the screen lift above the bezel on the left. After owning it for 2 days for some reason it just stopped working and wouldn't turn on.I returned for a new one that was a C60 and the new unit was perfect...actually had better colors and felt more solid. In my view no the C numbers don't mean much just how well they were put together...seems some bad ones slipped through.

Thanks for the further explanation, and I think that's how I understood your original point. I was worried that in my response I would come across as too defensive toward your original comment. That also wasn't my intention, so sorry to you, too!

Regarding the people who have gone through 6 or 7 (or look for the thread by the guy who returned something ridiculous like 11 before Google "fired" him as a customer), you are right. They are likely looking for perfection, which doesn't exist, at least not at this price point.

The one I returned due to a blown speaker was legitimate (very distorted audio at 50%). But it also had a single dead pixel that I wasn't too concerned about, plus an initial few minutes of screen ghosting that, as expected, never reappeared. Some people would have howled and done an RMA for those things.

So ones tolerance level to imperfection certainly depends on the individual, but, to your point, might be somewhat influenced by the peer pressure of negative comments on the forums.

Sorry to ask, but are you guys referring the 1st 3 characters on the Serial Number?

In this case, mine is a C90. Does this means it was manufactured on September?

Yep, that's exactly what it means.

C70 owner since August, and so far I've had literally no hardware problems with this one I bought from Wal-Mart, thankfully.

I've had a C60 since launch and haven't run into any problems.

Have they since changed the serial format? My second N7 (first one would not start) has a serial that begins CCO.

It's been 100% perfect out of the box.
