Can you still use the unlocked GNex as a WiFi hotspot even if you do not subscribe to ATT hotspot data plan? I understand that AT&T can detect if you are doing this and I understand that yes, you should subscribe to a hotspot plan if I want to do this....

However, my question is simply, can this be done? Or does it detect on whether or not you have the correct plan?

Thanks.

Yes, I have ATT and have used the hotspot feature and I currently don't have a tethering plan. ATT has never said anything.

yup - same here. works as tethering wifi hotspot... no tethering plan... although i wouldn't abuse it just in case...

however, being that the nexus is an unlocked device, at&t doesn't have the imei's in their database, so it's possible it can fly under the radar for tethering... that would be nice...
