Just thinking out loud...would this be possible? Take the XL ROM from HTC (do they provide stock (stock sense that is) images for their phones in the same way you can get them from google for the nexii?) and slap it onto the AT&T One X to get rid of whatever crap they put onto it, and even do the occasional free tether in a pinch (Do the HTC ROMs have the stock android tether app?)

Can't speak to the stock LX roms but the stock X roms (international version) do have tether, both usb, and wifi hotspot. They work. I've used them.

Someone with access to an AT&T version should go to Settings / Mobile Networks / Access point Names.
If you see an AP name in there listed with "TETHER" in the name, then you know that turning on tether will set alarm bells ringing at At&T's billing office.

If the XL does not have that AP name, chances are you can Tether with impunity, as long as you don't exceed your data cap.

Everyone was assuming AT&T had some deep packet inspection going on to detect tethering, but on AT&T phones they just have the tether app switch AP names.
