I have 1k+ contacts in my Gmail, but I really only want to sync the guys in my Google contacts "My Contacts" group. In my Phonebook, I can select only to show those guys.. but I wonder if the device still tries to sync all of them over time. It took ~5 mins when I first set the phone up. I wonder if this is causing some of my battery drain issues - attempts to sync all the contacts. Badass Battery Monitor is showing htc.com.launcher, specifically Contacts package, using a ton of battery...

Customize the list of contacts displayed. It's an option in the People app.

Once synced it won't matter. From then on it will only show the group you select.
