Your files on your SD card should be fine in any case. You will lose other files if you have to wipe data. However, rooted users can install Safestrap and keep a backup of their stock system on one slot.

The first step is to install the correct drivers for your phone on your PC. There should be forum threads for your device on this topic. I forgot to mention that Tomsgt123's video posted yesterday is one of the best that I've seen on Android rooting. He has prior videos on how to install drivers.

I Downloaded Root Checker And My Phone Is Not Rooted

When I rooted my infuse back in the day I used Odin and a UCLB3 present rooted firmware. I will try to find the links and post them here.
