The LG G5's Type-C port might not completely violate Type-C certifications after all.

After we saw Jerry's post on the HTC 10 and its charging nightmare, we'd assume that the exact same things would apply on the LG G5.

Well, according to the now-famous Benson Leung, the LG G5 might not be completely violating Type-C specifications, as tested by GTrusted.

According to him and GTrusted, not only does the G5 support Quick Charge 3.0, it also supports USB Power Delivery as well. Benson assumes that VESA DisplayPort is supported as well, and charging hubs that charge the phone while leaving a Type-A dongle to connect other things to may work with the G5 too (although these are assumptions, especially since the Nexus 5X and 6P didn't work with the latter). However, according to Benson's reply to LG's Ken Hong, while the G5 isn't completely violating Type-C specs, if Quick Charge 3.0 is used to modify the voltage past 5 volts, it violates Section 4.8.2 of the Type-C certification. So while it isn't completely violating Type-C specifications, the presence of QC 3.0 could mean that it's still not compliant.

This is a bit of a revelation and is probably one of the few positive G5 threads in the G5 subthread. I'm still not big 9n the phone, but it is interesting to see that LG has done it somewhat differently from HTC.

Hmmm

The G5's USB-C port supports USB Power Delivery and might also work with VESA DisplayPort and also some other Type-C goodies. However, even though it is better in terms of certification than something like the HTC 10, the presence of QC 3.0 means it is still not 100% compliant with Type-C specs because it can bring the voltage above the 5V limit specified in the Type-C certification guideline Section 4.8.2.
