Huh, I guess I never noticed it as Exchange Distribution Groups do work through the Global Address List. I've never made a local group from my personal contacts, as I primarily use it through work. Time to play around, I just assumed it would work the same way.

Yes they do. We use it all the time for our worker's VZW Blackberries and iPhones when they travel. They call it international data roaming. Have not used it with any 4G phones. Only my coworker and I have Galaxy Nexii through the company, and they don't send us anywhere :(
