Keyboard shortcuts

I recently got my wife to convert from BB to Android. She has a Droid 2, and I have a DInc, so there have been a few issues pop up that I can't seem to figure out.

Randomly her physical keyboard buttons will become shortcuts. All of a sudden, while typing, the "L" button will take her to calendar. There are a bunch of other button shortcuts that make it impossible to type. She never selected anything to activate that. It just randomly turns on, then randomly turns off. Is this an option somewhere. It's quite annoying.
