I am not impressed with Android phones, yet

When I heard Google was coming out with its own phone OS I was very excited. I am like most in I.T. an avid Googler, and hate to conform to Win32 type of socialism.

I know since most everyone out there uses Google exclusively too, but there are a lot of things Google does to set itself out for the corporate norm.

When heard the "droid" was coming the Verizon I was over-joyed, and could not believe that I would have the opportunity to get my hands on a "real" smart-phone other than the iPhone (not a big fan of Apple, and Steve Jobs fascist ways).

Sadly though I bought an A855 (droid w.\froyo), but I am so disappointed with it I can't bare to vocalize about it anywhere but a forum of like minded peers.

The phones battery life makes it useless to me! I have less than 12 hours and I know it will be critical! I have to always make sure wireless, Bluetooth and GPS receiver are powered off when not in use, and at times the account synchronizer as well to preserve battery life. I cannot install half of the apps I would like to because either the battery life worsens, or the device runs out of memory.

I have gotten to the point now where I am regret I ever made the jump to Android, and sadly considering an iPhone (if and when it ever comes to Verizon). My colleagues who own iPhones never complain about the same limitations as I am regarding lack of space, and poor battery life, and I am envious of that!

Am I alone in feeling this way, or are there others out there with same issues? Does anyone have any suggestions on how to help extend the battery life? ...anything because it has been less than a year and I am ready to throw it away!

Are you using a regular droid or d2?

There are plenty of forums and posts about how to improve battery
And gps will only drain your battry well in use - if you se the gps/satellite icon on the status bar.

Are you rooted? If your in the I.t. field then rooting should be an easy concept for you.
After rooting find a good kernel and rom combo that will improve battery.
A lot of developers tweak the voltage to increase battery

I have considered rooting the phone, do you have any suggestions on a good ROM and Kernel for Motorola A855 (Droid)?

Tell me if I am incorrect in my assumption that perhaps the Android Markets guidelines are less strict than that of the iTunes app store that more apps that are poorly written get through and we're subjected to memory leaks etc in them?

Here's the thing, and please don't take this the wrong way when I say this. From the little you have already described about your envy for the iPhone, you will always hold every other phone to a standard it cannot reach. I saw this all the time when working for Verizon. Someone would come in and ask what was "comparable" to the iPhone, then tear it to pieces because of what it "didn't" do. These consumers have already made up their mind. If you really want to make your android phone better then please take everyone's advice to heart. The ROM's and kernels will overall make your experience better and help with battery life. An extended battery would also improve battery life. As far as the market goes, yes you will find some garbage apps there and more and more are entering the market all the time. You said it best though, Apple restricts it's market but look at what you get for free with Google.

I'm assuming you're indeed referring to the Droid 1 and not the Droid 2? Let me share my experience since I came from the iPhone 3G:

I too hate Apple and their iron fisted control over their products. I had my iPhone 3G for two years and finally decided it's time to move on. I switched to Verizon with a Droid 2, since I wanted the physical keyboard, and at first haaated the Droid 2. Well, about a week later that opinion flipped to "I LOVE the Droid 2"! It really all came to me when doing a side by side comparison with my iPhone over my home wireless and the Droid 2. The typing was the biggest issue for me, but it simply turned out I just needed to get used to it - both the virtual and physical keyboards. After I did that eliminated that issue.

But let me put it like this... in my test I found a large number of Droid advantages. Here were a few:

1. The Droid can save ANY attachment to the SD card. The Droid can also email ANY attachment. This the iPhone just could not do. I could view documents and listen to MP3 attachments (I'm a musician), but I could not save or edit and later email any.

2. The Droid has typical browser features built right in like "Find in Page". The iPhone does not. The Droid also scrolls to the bottom of web pages in only a simple few flicks. I'm on a lot of forums and on one large forum the average "flicks" it took to scroll to the bottom of a page was 9 on the iPhone and 3 on the Droid. And sometimes I could do it in 2 flicks on the Droid.

3. The Droid, even over Verizon wireless, loads web pages faster than my iPhone 3G does on my 25mbps broadband connection!! Btw, I also tested this with an iPhone 4 at work (I'm an IT Tech for a law firm) and the Droid still beat the iPhone 4 in webpage loading tests.

4. The Droid has Flash, this is a huuuge bonus especially for me as I need to sometimes hear potential band mates audio players on their web pages. Well, with the iPhone this just isn't possible.

5. The stock PDF viewer is much more featured than the iPhone. I can do "Find in Page" or "Jump to Page" etc. Not so with the stock iPhone pdf viewer.

6. Physical keyboard with arrow keys. Typing on forums a lot I always found the iPhone magnifier to be the most irritating thing when trying to go back and correct text. Or even to simply erase portions of text in a quoted reply. It jumps all over the place and there's not way to just advance to the right one over. With the Droid I can navigate all over with the arrow keys.

7. Google has a number of extremely useful apps not available on the iPhone. I'm sure there are other app store equivalents, but IMO Google is one of the most innovative technology companies currently running on the planet.

8. The iPhone has *one* global email signature for all accounts! This is a problem on a business level and we've had many attorney's whine about it. Of course you could probably get another email app on the iPhone so I guess that could be worked around.

There are a bunch of other reasons I find the Droid to be quite more advanced than the iPhone, way too many to keep going on here. So, if you haven't tried the Droid 2 give that one a shot. If that is the one you have I suggest putting the battery profile to maximum battery saver, turn off auto screen brightness and set it as low as you can and still have it look great, and turn off other things you don't need. I keep bluetooth off cause I don't need it, only turn on wifi if I need it, I personally leave background sync off as it's a personal device and I don't need email delivered the instant it comes in (I check it manually).

The battery lasts a hell of a lot longer now. Besides, you can always get an extra micro USB cable and charge it on your computer at work during the day. Anyhow, best of luck... and don't make the mistake that I almost made! You will be losing a LOT of serious "real computer" functionality getting an iPhone instead. Btw, I forgot to mention something... I'm a Linux user at home and the iPhone can't connect to Linux without being jailbroken. Not so with the Droid, shows up perfectly fine as another drive.
