[PORT][MULTIBOOT][RECOVERY]Tasssadar's MultiROM for the Optimus V

dev thread on xda with download links there and a link to Tasssadar's original thread as well.

With Tasssadar's permission, I've ported his lovely multiboot utility and recovery to the OV.
It allows you to run ROMs from internal memory as usual, or copy from internal memory to the sd-ext partition and run ROMs from there as well!

The boot manager comes up right after the silver LG logo, before the initlogo.rle splash image. It uses the touchscreen to select instead of the hard buttons!!! Wow!

Discussion here, dev issues on the xda thread please.

I'm not going to watch this thread as closely as that one, but I'm still around a lot.

Short on time right now, I'll chat more about it later. Go have a look if you're interested.

Re: [PORT][MULTIBOOT][RECOVERY]Tasssadar's MultiROM for the Optim

This will be great for those of us running IHO, and need to activate quickly on a Froyo rom. Very useful. Makes it fun to test more roms.

Edit: Oops, just read post #2 over at XDA.

Re: [PORT][MULTIBOOT][RECOVERY]Tasssadar's MultiROM for the Optim

yes, i was rushed and didn't get that far over here.

you can run both froyo and iho, but will have to flash xionia redux to mix android versions.
i don't know (yet) of another way.

i thought the xionia kernels were great back when zefie was still working on them.
i never had the mass storage issues some people reported, and found the kernels fast and efficient.

so, you can use both stock and iho together, but will not be able to use bob's nice kernel and still have everything cooperate in the stock rom.
at least that's what I've read about trying to use gb kernels with froyo...
i was able to use everything i tried out in the stock rom back when i was playing with the optimus s gb kernel. so maybe it's worth a shoot!

I'll check it out when i have more time, or maybe someone adventurous will try it out and report on the results.
this is a very new thing yet, and no-one but me has tested it yet AFAIK.

Re: [PORT][MULTIBOOT][RECOVERY]Tasssadar's MultiROM for the Optim

I'm adventurous. I will try it now

Re: [PORT][MULTIBOOT][RECOVERY]Tasssadar's MultiROM for the Optim

Besides running different ROMs, are there other benefits to running a ROM from the SD card? Will it allow more room for more apps since everything is on SD? Does the SD card class matter?
Thanks!

Re: [PORT][MULTIBOOT][RECOVERY]Tasssadar's MultiROM for the Optim

I tried and I failed, my SD card is just too unstable, I was excited to try this too, but my nandroid for the sdext had md5 mismatch, which is more common than not with me anymore, I would love to have this, because I could use it for testing, hopefully I get a giftcard for Christmas so I can get me a non bargain bin SD card and test this out

yes, your partition size and number of roms stored there will affect your data app storage.
the class should matter.... my quadrant scores matched on the internal and sd install of mirage i tested with (they were duplicate installs), and, oddly, my class 2 8GB card did as well as the 8GB "high-speed" class (4 or 6, i forget, had to check mfr's Website) i paid a lot more for.

Is the rom on the SD card as smooth as if it was internal?

Re: [PORT][MULTIBOOT][RECOVERY]Tasssadar's MultiROM for the Optim

i can't tell the difference on mine, even with benchmarks.
the original, on optimus one p500, was reported to run slow for a while off the card and then speed up.

Re: [PORT][MULTIBOOT][RECOVERY]Tasssadar's MultiROM for the Optim

So, some time ago I wanted to use DarkTremour's A2SD GUI, and it said I needed a partition. I knew that there was a partition option in the recovery, but I've never been familiar with it. Being the adventurous person I am, I made a partition (blindly choosing options) and ended up deleting everything on my sd card. Now when I go to check my sd card storage, it says I only have 2 gb maximum when it's a 4 gb card. Is that a big enough partition? Lol

I believe you can fix this with GParted. It's a lot easier to use GParted for your partitioning needs than it is to use the command line or recovery rom. I too would like to know more about the extended partition on the SD card, but I haven't stumbled across a decent tutorial yet.

Re: [PORT][MULTIBOOT][RECOVERY]Tasssadar's MultiROM for the Optim

So if i wanted to replace the rom on sd,how do i replace it. Just boot into rom on sd,go to recovery and flash or what. Would like to try new Harmonia 2.

Re: [PORT][MULTIBOOT][RECOVERY]Tasssadar's MultiROM for the Optim

is it possible to make the multirom backup then transfer it to the memory to boot it i have no other way to unbrick it because i cant get into recovery or access via adb and internal memory rom wont boot all the way but i can get to the boot screen to boot from the sd-ext but i have no backup inside, if someone could help it would be very nice

About running a Rom from an SD card:
The Nook Color has SD card booting built into the hardware.
Us guys over at the Nook Color section have found that a Sandisk brand class 2 or 4 is the only stable card for use of running a rom because it has MUCH higher random read and write speeds that don't really matter when transferring large files but make all the difference when trying to run an OS from them.
Check out this thread for benchmarks and such for a bunch of different cards: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1005633

Just to be ultra clear, this has OS2SD in it? Or rather, does the same thing?
does something similar from the user end.
it bind-mounts /system, /data, and /cache from the backup in multiROMs directory on the sd-ext partition on boot before init runs, instead of letting init mount them from internal.
it only uses the one, regular, sd-ext partition instead of 3 seperate ones like the OS2SD mod.
