From the description I'd guess that it changes things like brightness, contrast and chroma of the screen (and perhaps backlight?) based on what's being displayed to attempt to lessen power usage. But that's purely guesswork.

there is no backlight on s3 but the rest is probably right mate. think ill just keep it unchecked, i charge my phone like 2-3 timers a day anyway lol.
unemployed so battery life doesnt worry me much :)

Yes, it auto adjusts according to the light. I have it on when I'm working since I go between indoors and outdoors a lot so I don't need to fiddle with the brightness.

My bad... I thought that was connected to the auto option in the pull down bar. Then for a second I thought it was why the stock browser is dimmer than other screens... But it's not that either. I've had it checked since I got the phone and playing around with it now I'm seeing no difference.

That's an odd question to ask on a tech forum.

Odd indeed, but my s3 doesnt have that option above the "auto adjust screen tone" one. You have the international version no.?

nah its the "screen mode" option the north american models dont have for some reason. it only contains the options: natural, standard, dynamic, and movie. i prefer dynamic

I have his option on the us version. Not sure how much it really helps the battery. Considering turning it off and seeing if it fixes my screen flicker issue
