Why is my screen black but I can hear my phone booting up?

my phone appear to work (turn on, ring / vibrate when called, the LED light up when charging), but the screen stays black

When you turn it off and turn it back on, do you see the Samsung Logo on it? Also, try booting up into Recovery Mode (Hold together Power + Home + Volume down while powering on). Do you see anything after a few seconds of this button press sequence?

If the answer was no to both questions, then I'm afraid there might be something wrong with your display, and it might range from a loose connector that's easily popped back in to a burnt OLED Panel or a faulty display driver.

Push the home button (bottom of the front) then swipe across the screen.
