Update fails

Tried to do the push update that just came out, and it failed. Twice. Phone reboots, goes into recovery for a few seconds, then just continues booting and tells me the update could not be installed. Any ideas?

Re: Update fails

You will need around 6 - 7GB of free space on your phone for this update from AT&T. See, here.

Doh, missed that. It's ridiculous.

Fair's, fair. All that bloatware needs some extra space. My unbranded Galaxy S5, G900F, on stock Samsung firmware has circa 12GB of 16GB phone memory free whilst AT&T's free space is only around 10.5GB I am advised.

I wonder if they actually think people want all of that bloatware tripe. They could at least be decent and let us delete it.

Re: Update fails

6-7gb is ridiculous!!! I've tried many times and still get the fail... I'm at 4gb available. I'm starting to think that at&t is doing this on purpose to get people to upgrade to the S6 or note with higher internal GB'S and faze out the s5 with the option of extra memory.

Re: Update fails

That is crazy! Mine kept failing too. I tried over and over. Even changing the date on my phone so I didn't have to wait. I went into my storage this morning and looked and only had 1. something gb available. WHAT!! Well I have 4.7 or so Cached. That was nuts. I cleared that and I am at 6.89 I think it was. Trying update now!

Re: Update fails

With 6.5gb, it worked. And it broke my battery usage monitor. SUCKS

Re: Update fails

Yes mine worked as well with 6.8gb. I don't notice anything different. I know most of the update was under the hood but I was reading that the notification panel etc was supposed to be different but nothing on mine is any different. Sorry about the battery usage monitor

The battery usage monitor miraculously resolved itself. I noticed that the album art no longer is full screen when playing music or podcasts (I like this) and that the ATT hotspot app is gone and it's now all in the settings menu (weird). No performance or battery life difference for me.

I saw all these posts and so I cleared out 7.04 GB on my device memory. IT STILL FAILED! I've downloaded this update 5 times now, each time clearing out more and more space. How can it be working for people that only have 6.5 GB's of free space but not for me with 7.04 GB free? There has to be something else going on.

So because I was having a number of problems with my Samsung S5 from AT&T (SM-G900A) already, I decided to do a full backup and factory wipe, upgrade, and then restore. The results speak for themselves and other than the sluggish camera, I am happy with the phone now.

I backed up using:

  • Samsung Smart Switch
  • Google (Accounts -> Google -> all checkboxes checked for syncing)
  • Export Contacts to .vcf
  • SMS Backup and Restore
  • Moved all my photos, videos, ringtones, downloads, documents etc. to my PC using USB3 cable
  • Took notes of which apps and widgets were on each page of my Launcher/Home screen

I then did a factory reset and wiped the SD card after confirming there was nothing I needed on it. I then upgraded to 5.1.1 and then put in my Google credentials.

Next up was Samsung Smart Switch. It restored the Apps and my Call Log, however it did not restore the Home screen(s) or Contact Favorites. Fortunately I took notes of how my Homescreens were arranged. Samsung Smart Switch's backup of Messages stopped in June of 2015 for some reason so I had to run SMS Backup and Restore. It took 6 hours to restore 14k of messages. I did end up using the .vcf Restore to get back the contacts Google missed. After all this, I was about 97% of where I was.

Two other treats to myself were to install Textra for text messages which lets you reply to text messages in-app and Nova Launcher in place of the annoying Touchwiz.
