S7 edge overheating

When I first got my s7 edge, it would get warm from use but not too bad, and I could leave it to charge overnight, with the smart charging in the phone, so it knows when to stop, but last night at around 11, I left it to charge and woke up at 9:30, and my phone was so hot, when I put the screen to my face, I was actually in pain, can someone tell me why?

You probably had an app or a setting that was causing the phones processors to run all the time and not sleep. Thus causing the phone to run hot.
