Car mode tells me "this function not permitted in car mode" - what?!?

While driving, both my wife and I have had NUMEROUS experiences of having our S7 phones responding with "This function is not permitted (or "not supported" or "not allowed") in car mode". Most typically this happens while trying to send text (via voice in car mode). The error message often repeats 2 or 3 times, as if it is caught in some loop. We aren't trying to do anything out of the ordinary. We never experienced this issue with our S5 phones.
