Updating Android without the Touchwiz update?

I've been reading through the comments on the various Touchwiz news articles and quite a few are stating that the only way to update Android itself is through the Touchwiz update - meaning the people who don't want it are stuck with the version they have now. I suspected as much long before the update went live, but can anyone confirm this - via an announcement or statement of some kind?

There are several tech websites that say Samsung's position is you need to upgrade to TouchWiz in order to receive future updates on the Tab 10.1. Checkout Joanna Stern's review on ThisIsmynext.com.

The only other option I could see around this is if your rooted and then remove the new TW update, but I'm not entirely positive on this but it does sound plausible. Might be something to check with the devs on the Galaxy Tabs, but at the same time I understand that TW being part of the OS update it works hand and hand together so you maybe stuck with it.
