Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 | Constantly Calculating Space

Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 SM-T210R 8GB, Wi-Fi

A friend has run into this problem where the Tab seems to be out of memory.
- it's affecting both RAM and Storage.
- no memory card ever used only the internal SD

Tried uninstalling apps
- tried from the Downloads folder
- nothing happens

- tried from the the Applications Manager in Settings
- fails usually ending with 'Unfortunately, Settings has stopped'

Tried connecting via PC to get access to the internal SD, no luck
- ends with a MTP USB Device Failed when installing the Tab drivers

The reason for trying is to avoid losing important files.

Are there options other than a factory reset?
