Sending a text to multiple recipients

I have had my transform for a while and have never been able to send a text to multiple recipients. My contacts do not appear in the drop down menu, whether I type their name or even when I enter their entire phone number. Unless I have a thread with that contact already, I have to access their info through the contacts list,and message one at a time from there. Is this a common problem? Is there a quick fix? Thanks in advance.
