sounds like you have an older version of optiauto. the instructions above contain a link to the thread with the latest optiauto. the download link itself is in step 2 of that thread.

unless you're ok with losing your root access, don't OTA update the phone. iirc a way to simply stop the ota update message is to wait for the update message to appear, click "more info", then pull the battery. if you want to update the phone to the latest version (ZVJ) and still have root...

from the looks of it, your guide covers and recommends downgrading to ZVD, rooting ZVD, and sticking with ZVD. this method works, but it requires a data wipe, which i'm assuming yoyo doesn't necessarily want. the root method i'm suggesting allows him to keep his data.

not quite sure what "on this flash drive" means. the ZVH update.zip should be placed on the SD card of the optimus s, and optiauto-sfx.exe should be run on the windows PC used to perform the rooting procedure. also not quite sure what "optional exploits" you'd need/want to do after you root...

i'm guessing that file permissions got wrecked somehow. you're going to have to backup whatever you can, wipe the phone, and reinstall everything from scratch.

keep this in mind: you can't root ZVJ directly; you have to jump through a bunch of hoops (downgrading, rooting, upgrading, rerooting) and root ZVJ indirectly. go to settings > about phone. what is your Baseband Version? (note, ZVJ=MVJ and ZVD=MVD. we tend to use ZVJ instead of MVJ on this forum...

you don't need any cellular service to root. all you need is the phone, a computer with internet access, a usb cord, a willingness to read, and a bit of patience. which step are you currently stuck on?

yeah cm7 lets you do this in the system settings. not sure about the other cm roms though. for all other gb-based roms, check out chainfire3d. the app description says it's requires a 1ghz processor, but it doesn't; i've used it before and it works fine.

iirc windows doesn't properly connect to cm7's built-in usb tether. it works with linux though. btw are you trying to use your phone as a wifi adapter for a wifi-less computer? or are you simply trying to connect a computer to sprint's 3g network?

you're flashing the ZVD to ZVJ patch and not the ZVJ to ZVD patch, right?
