capacitive buttons don't turn off

My Epic 4g is rooted, running MostlyStock ROM (EI22). I remember the capacitive buttons used to turn off when the keyboard light timed out, but now they stay if the screen is on. If I'm reading something or watching video, it's very distracting. Is there any way to force the buttons to not be lit up? Thanks in advance!

I have the same problem with a completely stock Epic 4G on 2.3.6 EL30. Wasn't sure I was just imagining things but was pretty sure those button's lights turned off with the screen timeout when I had Froyo.

Has anyone found any solution to this? I'd even be OK with an app that I could use to turn off or enable/disable the lights for the buttons. I've tried a bunch of apps from Android Market, but none affected the soft buttons :-( It seems like such a minor thing but it is soooooo distracting and frustrating!!
