encryption no longer an option?

I had encryption turned off because of the gps failed to function with the SD and internal storage encrypted. My girlfriends phone decrypted itself and now the option to encrypt seems to be gone for both of us. In it's place seems to be credential storage but i don't know what all that entails as I have not played with it. Does anyone else know how this feature works or if i am just not finding the encryption setting?
