Default Tinfoil hat alert!! (Apple vs. Samsung)

My contract expires in December and I plan on getting an S3.. In light of the current dispute between Apple and Samsung I got to thinking..

Should Samsung lose what would that mean for the S3? Any chance it would get pulled off the market? Some of the analysis I've read said that there could be quite a rippling affect should Apple prevail..

    Thoughts??

Probably enough in inventory and the suit will probably be thrown out.

The trial is already underway, so it didn't get thrown out..

I'm sure there was plenty of inventory when the Galaxy Nexus was temporarily pulled, plus didn't Samsung have to pull a 10" tablet? I'm sure there's plenty of those sitting in some warehouse..

It is a running comment that the GS3 was designed by lawyers with the thought of a potential suit. This is another attempt to litigate your competitor rather actually compete. Apple can't push too hard as they will be facing countersuits from Samsung.

While there's no way in anyone's right mind they should lose I have a bad feeling about this simply based on Apple fanboyism which extends even to the judge and jury. People wear blinders, they honestly think the most popular company, band, artist, whatever is the one that created everything and even if they think they didn't they always seem to feel they did a better job at working the material. I've seen bands openly admit ripping off a riff from an unknown band (like Metallica admitted they ripped off the Enter Sandman riff) and the fans fully support them saying crap like, "Well they actually DID something with the riff and made it cool, who cares about a nobody band!?". People actually think this way and it disgusts me.

With Apple they didn't invent 95% of the iPhone, they simply glued together existing tech in a way that worked very well, was very easy, smart, and appealing to average people. Do they deserve credit? Hell yes! But did they invent the rectangle? Hell no!! Phones were going that shape long before Apple and what the heck do they expect other companies to do, warp the shape unnecessarily just to not have a similar rectangle phone? What about the icons they cry so much over saying everyone copied? Microsoft, Apple, Linux, etc have all been using icons on the desktop that are really no different that the icons on our phones.

Apple knows they are in for trouble and the only thing they can think to do is litigate. The new iPhone 5 doesn't even seem all that different at all. Matter of fact, they are only *now* adopting the widescreen format! They will eventually fall and I see it starting to happen right now. People are getting bored with the same thing every year with small improvements. They are getting bored of all the locked down silliness. And now Apple is removing Google Maps in favor of their own app and they are also now removing Youtube. They are burying themselves and can't even see it. They are acting like a little kid packing up their toys in a playground and going home because they can't always get their way and be the dominant attention child.

    Good riddance.

I used to buy nothing but Apple for everything electronic. iPhones, iPads, ATV's, iPods and Mac's. I just sold my last iDevice and heading to get a Nexus 7 tomorrow. I will not buy another iDevice again. This is my little protest against what Apple is doing. It's not much, but if millions of others do it, who knows? Apple might get the f%#king message, that what their doing is the wrong course of action!

After buying my S3, I wouldn't have gone back to an iPhone anyway! But with Samsung owning a whole gambit of LTE technology, I hope they sue the sh1t out of Apple once the iPhone 5 is revealed and it has LTE. And then I hope Google sues the crap out of Apple when the notification center patent gets approved by the uspto. To bad RIM didn't patent BBM. That could have been a nice payday, since Apple just blantantly ripped that off. Can't stand the hypocrisy of Apple!

Like you their litigation and arrogance is responsible for me moving totally away from everything Apple. I have been a fan boy for over a decade. My Power Book Pro is about 5 years old and will not be replaced by an Apple product.

I'm honestly not sure how worried people should be about the S3. Apple's not focusing on it at all for the trial, they're talking mostly about previous samsung products. Plus, they previously tried to block the sale of the S3 in the US and haven't said a thing about it since. I'd hope there's a precedent because of that.

The s3 and the android platform are just better. End of story! With that being said I have not and will not buy any apple products. I dislike them. Only apple would ruin another platforms release. Hox anyone? So at the end of the day apple will never see my support. If others would be like this then apple wouldn't own so much of the market. Plus we are seeing this change already.

I agree with NewMind. This trial is not relevant to the S3 since Apple tried to banned the S3 from being released and also tried to add the S3 in the current on going trial but was denied.
In my opinion, by the time this trial is over, you might be thinking about an S4, Note 2, or new Nexus.

Whatever the outcome will be, I believe it will only make Android better by innovating away from Apple's patents, which seems to be less relevant everyday. In my opinion, it really seems like Apple has stopped innovating (by looking at the next iPhone's design [just a spec bump]). Their ecosystem has much more competitors than before, be it Amazon, Play Store, Spotify, etc. So, their ecosystem is not as attractive as before.

I think it will be better for the consumer at the end of the day.

You should follow it more closely. Looks like Samsung is in big trouble. Wouldn't prevent me from buying a phone for the Op but you may lose some features.

Nobody knows what the next iPhone hardware design will be. Everything right now is rumor and rumor has been wrong every single iPhone release.
Not all the features of iOS 6 have been revealed either as some are hardware specific.
Many app stores have come and gone since Apple introduced theirs and Apples is the only one still making money. They have far more complex apps and many, many, more developers. Nobody else is even close to the iOS ecosystem right now when it comes to devices, accessories, apps, and developers.
Playstore is a mess btw and what Spotify has to do with it I don't know since they are just one of many streaming services on many devices including iOS.
There are actual numbers around these things you know so you can do better than just saying what you would like to believe is true.

    Samsung sues.
    Motorola sues.
    HTC sues.
Google sues and is arrogant as can be.
Microsoft sues and makes 2 to $6 per Android handset.

So following your logic you should not use any of their devices or products either.

I'd like to see the side by side comparison by Apple, showing how they can rip off Google's notification bar.

    Apple's implementation:

A popup that displays content and leaves a red dot indicating app must be reopened to show notifications.

    Google's implementation:

A pull down bar, showing each notification specific to each app. Clicking said notification opens up the corresponding app and clears the notification from the tray.

    Apple's solution.

Make pull down notification tray. Make notifications better by showing each notification specific to each app in said tray. Clicking said notification opens up the corresponding app.

It's OK for Apple to blatantly RIP OFF Android features, but it's NOT OK for manufacturers to inspire ideas designed by Apple for use in their products?

Samsung didn't steal the "End Call" button, they made theirs more useful. EXACTLY what Apple did with their notification system.

I'll leave you all with this little youtube video..

    Hypocracy much?

It is hypocracy however it is one of the situations Google puts itself and its partners in when you go Open Source. You cannot patent Open Source concepts, it is not allowed. It is also one of the reasons Apple chooses to sue Samsung instead of Google as Google is easily claim and display prior art to invalidate the Apple claims and some of their patents. It is annoying that Google leaves Samsung hanging out there instead of joining in the defense, however I really don't know patent law so I don't know what is allowed and what is not...

Google could spend a bit of its coin and attack Apple's patents with their own prior art and with Motorola's patent library but so far they have been unwilling to stoop to Apple's level. Probably it has something to do with Android being just a piece of Google's business where iPhone/iPad is the majority of Apple's business.

This is what bothers me so much about this, it's become so BS general grey area nonsense. Obviously stealing a technical patent that someone else invented is wrong, but this whole design aspect is completely absurd. You can't patent the rectangle shape of the phone, you can't patent the size of the End Call button, you can't patent that instead of just seeing a phone number the contact photo displays when one calls, you can't patent the use of small square icons, you can't patent your phone having a front facing camera, etc. I mean this is really ridiculous and Apple clearly ripped off the "design aspects" of others - IT'S HUMAN NATURE. Artists do it, musicians do it, contractors do it, engineers do it, every does it. Apple, and Microsoft, has a long history of copying things, design and physical hardware (*cough* mouse and GUI from Xerox *cough*).

People are always influenced by the works of others and unfortunately there's simply no way around that other than raising human beings in a completely isolated environment, and even then the schooling would still bring outside influence to the person. Why else would Colton have coined the memorable quote, "Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery"?

Exactly, and it's funny too because Apple has sued for other companies using a "Swipe to unlock" graphical interface on the phone. Truth be told it's all the "laws" fault. This type of nitpicking patents should never have been allowed. A simple thought of, "Oh... why do we make it that you slide your finger across to unlock the phone?" should not be something patentable because it's far too simplistic. More complex methods that involve addition technology like finger print unlocking I could see, face unlocking I could see, but sliding a finger? Well what is everyone else to do, a complex tap dance to unlock their phone just cause some designer was first to think to slide their finger? Sorry, but that is plain silly.

At the end of the day though the lawyers know the more they allow this kind of silliness to go to court the more money winds up in their pockets. It's all a self generating income scheme IMO.
