Make sure to test your gmail push after the phone is asleep for more than an hour.

ok i let my phone sleep for 7+ hours and just sent myself an email from my yahoo account to my Gmail account this morning and it immediately was pushed to my EVO and was instantly received. this was after a 7+ hour EVO sleep still sleeping.

so i can confirm to you all that unchecking the always on mobile data option does not nix your instant push Gmail - even after/during a long EVO sleep.

good news!

I found out whats killing Battery Life

I assume most people are using Googles Email Address to sync/use the phone.

Well get this, when you use it, it automatically signs you into Google Talk.
TURN IT OFFF. its like havin AIM always on, major battery hog.

"Google Talk

When you sign up for the Google Market or Gmail with your Gmail account information, you are also signed in to the Google Talk instant messaging application. The Talk application tracks the presence of your Google Talk contacts in order to let you know who is available to instant message. Each presence change uses power, even if you do not have the Talk application open.

If you do not use Talk on your device or do not mind if it is only operating when you actually have the application open, then you can eliminate this extra battery consumption:

1. Press Menu then tap All apps > Talk > Menu > More > Settings
2. Uncheck the automatically sign in box.
3. Make sure you exit the application by going to Menu > More > and selecting Sign Out
4. In order to again receive Instant Messages through the Talk application, all you'll need to do is open the Talk application again and it will automatically sign you in.

Note: Make sure you always exit the application by selecting Sign Out to reduce battery consumption. Exiting the application by use of the back or home keys will not sign you out and battery life will not be improved."

It's strange to see just how many things you are automatically signed into because so many applications are linked within google and the phone's software.

Thanks OP, will give it a go!

I notice this is always running, but I just started using it to communicate with my wife through out the day, when we both had Black Berrys (she still has one) we used BBM but now we use Google talk. I try to keep it shut off when we're not using it though

The GPS enabled hogs battery as well. Read about it last night and tried it today. And about this time I would be in 69% percentile of battery life, right now I am at 78% and this has been since 6:45 am Central time, it is now 9:45 am. So that has helped.

PS.
Also remove it from Running Applications in your Evo Phone Settings. I dont think it shows up in the Advanced Task Killer list. I removed mine since the whole debate over using a Task Killer or not, so im trying to do without.

I also havent tested this, but I figure its worth a try. It's like AIM, so it must be pretty strenuous on battery. Let me know though!
I should change the title of this thread to "I Found Out What MIGHT be Killing Battery Life."

yes, because apps that utilize GPS are always searching for your location and pulling information from satellites and/or 3G/4G to do it

Dang, you beat me to it! but yes this is what I discovered as well...

One note though, when removing it from Running applications, I wasn't able to receive push emails from GMAIL through the GMAIL APP...so i don't know if these are related somehow.

Let me know if your does not do the same.

Does unchecking the always on mobile data option still give you exchange mail? I unchecked it last night but I noticed I'm not getting exchange email.

GMAIL push worked for me with Talk turned off. I just tested it a few times to be sure.
