eSIM - what is the user experience like?

I'm using a Pixel 4a (non-5G) in the USA. I understand it supports eSIM, but I also read somewhere that it does not support dual SIM (meaning you can only have either the eSIM or the nano-SIM, but not both active at any time).

Is this still the case? (the article was from 2020).

If both can be active, what is the user experience like? I'm hoping you can store multiple eSIMs and easily switch from one to the other. Can you configure the nano-SIM line to use the eSIM's data for W-Fi calling if the nano-SIM line doesn't have service?

I'm on AT&T, and would leave that line on the nano-SIM. My plan (if this looks like it will work) is to use a US Mobile eSIM as a backup for data in an area where I don't get good enough coverage on AT&T (can't even call or text), while US Mobile (on Verizon) does have decent coverage in that area. That area happens to be around my house, so it's important (but I also need Canada roaming, so that's why I don't just move the line to US Mobile, oh that and US Mobile deprioritization is pretty bad).

Thanks.
