Android Central Question

I'm trying to use my bluetooth keyboard with my Mi Pad 5.
Some keys seem to get intercepted/altered by the OS.
When I press Esc it gets altered to `
Pressing the Super/Meta/Windows key doesn't register any keypress in keyboard tester apps.
I can use Super+L to lock my device etc. but I can't use it as a modifier for custom shortcuts.

Is there a way to get around this?

What brand keyboard are you using? Is it designed for Android?
It's a custom DIY keyboard. Definitely not specifically made for Android. But I don't think that should matter. The keyboard definitely sends the correct keycode for Super/Meta/Windows/LGUI.

There maybe an app on the play store that modifies keyboard keys for you
There is an app called External Keyboard Helper(EKH) but that doesn't really help because the keycode gets altered/interpreted differently by the OS before it arrives at the app.
