OS Options

The PengPods come with Android and Linaro installed on flash. The system will boot by default into Android (initially, this can be changed but Android should be run first to format the shared partition). The Android install has Google certification and access to the play store, maps and other typical Android apps you might expect. Linaro is a typical LXDE desktop environment backed by the Ubuntu Arm repositories including LibreOffice, GIMP, Apache, MySQL and most other mainstream Linux desktop applications.

Here is a list of the currently booting OS/Distribution options

Android 4.1 (4.2 Source available, should be ready soon)
Linaro (Based on Ubuntu for Arm with LXDE)
Fedora
Arch
OpenSUSE
Ubuntu Touch
Here is a list of the OS options we are working on adding. The funds raised will help bring more of these to a working state. Some of these could be guaranteed with stretch goals if we reach that point.

Debian
Bodhi
Tizen
Cyanogenmod
FirefoxOS
Mer/NemoMobile
Chromium
Plasma Active

With an open system the possibilities are only limited by your abilities and imagination.

An open system protects your freedom as well. All source for the Android build is available, not just Linux. You don't have to worry about what your tablet might be sending behind your back it is all free to be reviewed, modified and customized to your liking.

Why we need you

We want to be able to offer PengPod 1040 Tablet with the best software possible, at the best price possible and produce a quality product with an experienced, open source friendly contract manufacturer. To meet our hardware goals and guarantee quality we need volume.

This is our second time to market and we are now familiar with the demands of delivering the perks. Open software is the lifeblood of the PengPod and what makes it so versatile. There are many exciting, evolving touch based Linux platforms we would like to offer with the PengPod. Each of these will require time and effort and with funding we will be able to make more of these available.

Crowd-funding will allow us to bring on more permanent staff, including at least one full time engineer who will be dedicated to expanding and improving the software options available for the PengPod 1040.
