You pay 600 for a phone I pay 100. Assuming we both have the same plan we pay the same over 24 months unless you decide you no longer want to be with Verizon where I have to stay or buy out of contract

My point is that the difference between the costs of paying $98 versus $300 pales in comparison to the total 2 year costs that you must pay in both cases: roughly $1920 (or $1680 without 1,000 per month text messaging). But of course it's smart to pay $98 like you did and pocket the $200. $200 is nothing to sneeze at for most of us.

On your $600 versus $100 point: it makes sense to pay full price ($600-$700) and not the subsidized price ($100-$300) when the full price plus the cost of the amount of unlimited mobile data you use for 2 years will be less or roughly equal per month compared to the price of the subsidized phone plus the cost for the same amount of data over 2 years on a tiered data plan. (2 years because that is how long you must pay for mobile data for an unsubsidized phone). Many people have done this comparison and have found that it is cheaper to buy full price.
