Just want to share my experience with the blank-screen boot issue after modifying the build.prop file. Turns out that the incorrect permission of the build.prop file was causing the boot issue for my HTC M8. The build.prop file needs to have a permission of chmod 744. I found the solution from googling but I can't post the link before posting ten posts.

After I modified the build.prop file in Windows 8, notepad probably changed the permission of the build.prop file causing the boot error. So, you could've avoided the longer way of restoring the phone by just fixing the permission back to chmod 744. It worked for my HTC M8 after being able to go into the recovery menu.
