To Root or not to Root ?

I'm going to be receiving my first Tablet in 2 days, a Samsung Galaxy S2 w/ Android 6.0 Marshmallow.
I saw some older forums that said the first thing someone should do is root their Android when they get it.
I'm unsure if this is still valid or necessary.
Should I attempt to root this device?
I'd have no experience or clue where to start.
Should I back it up first. I'd have no clue how to do this either.
